Spring Into Fun for the Whole Family!

March may bring the occasional rainy days and still-cool evenings, but most of our time leading into spring will feature clear sunny skies that help thaw the grays of winter. That’s why we’ve prepared this special guide to planning a multi-generational visit to our beautiful corner of California’s Central Coast. Load up the kids, pick up the grandparents, even the dog is welcome – let’s get trip planning!

While adults can always find fun things to do wherever they are, it can sometimes be difficult to navigate a destination to find attractions that are ideal for children and seniors too. It’s not just about finding places without age restrictions: it’s about finding places that offer a variety of activities to engage every age and ability level.

Buellton and all of the Santa Ynez Valley provides the perfect backdrop for a family vacation that includes everyone from great-grandparents to newborns. Because the activity levels and nap schedules of diversely aged groups need a lot of flexibility, these recommendations keep that in mind and provide alternative activities to keep high energy travelers active and on the move – while offering plenty of restful alternatives for those who need them.

Flying Flags RV Resort is not your usual RV campground. In fact, you don’t have to have an RV at all! Their cabins and cottages come with fully equipped kitchens that make it easy to eat around special schedules. The resort boasts multiple playgrounds and pools, plus plenty of open space to ride bikes, scooters and boards. They also offer a small off-leash dog park, if furry family members are joining you! Plus there is an onsite General Store and restaurant – Feather & Fire; and planned activities for guests like movie nights and BBQs. It’s the perfect place to keep busy – and find rest – so everyone can move at their own speed.

For the most adventurous among us, nothing says Spring Break like a visit to Highline Adventures. Whether soaring through the skies on the fastest and longest zipline in the state; or climbing, crossing and maneuvering your way through the obstacles in the Adventure Park – Highline Adventures has adrenaline-pumping fun for everyone. Have a member or two in the group who want a milder take on adventure? They can enjoy a guided Protea Walking Tour and learn more about Highline Adventure’s stunning protea flower fields!

If animals are high on your family’s interest list, definitely add Santa Ynez Valley Horseback Rides to the plan! SYV Horseback Rides offers guided trail rides along the Santa Ynez River for ages 8+ (6+ can join in on the Family Fun Ride). For the youngest horse enthusiasts, plan a Magical Pony Encounter for ages 2-12. Unicorn horn optional! The stables also boast a petting zoo, and the grounds are right next to River View Park and the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden: a perfect place to explore for any members of the group not ready to hit the riding trail.

Want to make fun family keepsakes to enjoy all year long? Plan a private class at Community Clayworks! From ornaments to charcuterie trays – and everything in between – these talented artists can help even the smallest creators build a masterpiece.

Plus, as younger party members start to lose interest an adult can take them next door to Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. to grab a bite to eat while the others finish up! Weather permitting, Fig’s outdoor area offers plenty of room for kids to run and play while the adults enjoy a local brew – or two.

If you have any grade school-aged children in your group who are learning about the Mission system, you’ll definitely want to plan a visit to La Purisima Mission. The grounds have been extensively restored to represent the mission era of the 1820s; and feature a beautiful Visitors Center, dozens of historic buildings to explore, resident farm animals to enjoy, and miles of hiking and horseback riding trails.

California Fourth Grade Students

Tip: All California Fourth Grade Students are eligible for the California State Park Adventure Pass, which allows the student, their family and friends free access to 54 state parks.

And don’t forget to plan at least one meal at Vega Vineyard and Farm. Located just down the road from Flying Flags RV Resort, Vega offers stunning vineyard views, award winning wines, and extraordinary food – all while providing a relaxed and approachable atmosphere for families with kids. While their farm-to-table menu rotates to feature only the finest locally sourced ingredients like lamb and wild boar; it also has simple, kid-friendly options like Cavatelli Cacio e Pepe (housemade pasta with pecorino romano and parmesan), flatbreads, and burgers. One of the best things about visiting Vega as a family may not be the food; but the fact that while waiting for their meals the kids (and wandering adults) can explore the Vega Farm Stand, plus visit and feed the farm animals!
