Pumpkin Patches, Haunted Houses and Harvest Moons bring enchanting fun to Buellton.

We’re in that magical time of year: Fall has arrived in the Santa Ynez Valley. The mornings arrive crisp and golden, and the afternoons are warm enough for a pumpkin patch in short sleeves. When the sun dips behind the Sta. Rita Hills, the evenings turn cool enough for a cozy sweater and a flashlight in your pocket. Scarecrows have popped up in storefronts, corn mazes rise from the fields, and the whole Valley seems to be in on the fun.

If you’ve been searching for ways to make this month memorable, this is your sign to hit the road. Buellton is the perfect home base for a fall road trip filled with family-friendly Halloween activities, from pumpkin picking and potion-making to haunted houses and moonlit adventures.

Pack the costumes. Bring the flashlights. We’ve got the rest.

Add the resort’s play areas, pools and off-leash dog park, and even the youngest travelers will be begging to come back next year.

Pick the Perfect Pumpkin

Solvang Farmer Pumpkin Patch
Open Daily Through October 31

No fall road trip is complete without a proper pumpkin patch, and this is the one.

Wander rows of pumpkins in every shape, size and color imaginable, from tiny minis to giants you’ll need help lifting. Then test your sense of direction in the sprawling 14-acre corn maze, complete with a scavenger hunt hidden along its winding paths. Little ones can tackle the smaller kids’ maze, and everyone will want a bag of freshly popped, farm-grown popcorn or kettle corn for the ride home. On select nights near Halloween, the maze opens after dark for flashlight adventures under the stars.

For the 2026 season, the patch is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from September 25 through October 31, and it’s just a short, scenic drive from Buellton along Alamo Pintado Road

Pumpkin Patch Pro Tip: Visit on a weekday morning for smaller crowds and the best light for family photos. Wear closed-toe shoes for the corn maze, and bring a wagon if you’re planning to go big.

Perfect for: Families of all ages, photo lovers, and anyone who’s ever dreamed of a picture-perfect fall.

Meet the Valley’s Creepiest Crawlers

Wild Tarantula Trails at Restoration Oaks Ranch
Select Fall Afternoons

Here’s a fall tradition your kids will be telling their friends about for weeks! Every autumn, male tarantulas emerge from their burrows in the late afternoon in search of a mate, and Wild Farmlands Foundation invites families to witness the spectacle up close.

Guided by knowledgeable hosts, these short, educational hikes (no more than half a mile on level ground) wind through native oak woodlands in search of these gentle giants. Guides catch a wild tarantula, share fascinating facts about its habitat and behavior, and even let brave participants hold it before it’s released back into the wild. If you’re lucky, you might spot a courting pair!

Restoration Oaks Ranch is just a short drive south of Buellton in Gaviota. Plan to arrive by 4 p.m.; hikes begin at 4:20. Bring water, a hat, a jacket and comfortable walking shoes.

Perfect for: Curious kids, nature lovers, and families who like their Halloween with a side of science.

Dare to Enter the Haunted House

Annual Haunted House at Solvang Festival Theater
Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24, 2026

Presented by Solvang Parks & Rec in partnership with Buellton Rec for families throughout the Santa Ynez Valley, this annual haunted maze transforms the historic outdoor Solvang Festival Theater into a spine-tingling adventure. This year’s theme, Nightmares, promises eerie surprises, spooky scenes and just the right amount of fright.

Doors open from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Families with younger children should plan to arrive early: from 6 to 6:30 p.m., the maze is “kid friendlier.” Tickets are sold at the door: $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under.

Perfect for: Families with school-age kids, teens, and thrill-seekers of all ages.

After Dark: Ghosts, Mysteries & Moonlit Thrills

Once the little ones are tucked in (or if your crew is a little older and a lot braver), the Valley’s spookiest side comes out to play.

Go Ghost Hunting

The Haunt Ghost Tours: Solvang & Lompoc

Grab your ghost-hunting gear and uncover the dark side of the Danish Capital of America. The Haunt offers hands-on paranormal investigation tours in Solvang, along with a Wine & True Crime tour for the grown-ups. In October only, the fun expands to Old Town Lompoc’s haunted history. For the truly fearless, special late-night paranormal investigations are scheduled inside the Solvang Festival Theater on Saturday, October 10, and at Lompoc’s historic Broughton House on Friday, October 16.

With Solvang just minutes away and Lompoc an easy drive west on Highway 246, Buellton puts both spooky destinations within easy reach.

Solve a Murder Mystery
Cloak & Dagger Mysteries

Ready to play the detective, the witness, or even the killer? Cloak & Dagger Mysteries hosts immersive murder mystery experiences where every guest receives a custom character complete with secrets and motives.

There are no scripts to memorize, just a night of intrigue, costumes and clues. Watch for upcoming public events, or book a private mystery for your group of 12–60 at an iconic Buellton destination. Events are designed for adults 18 and up, making this an ideal plan for a friends’ getaway or a family reunion with the older crowd.

Zip Beneath the Full Moon
Moonlight Zipline Adventure at Highline Adventures

For the adventurous, there’s nothing quite like soaring over the Santa Ynez Valley by moonlight. Once a month, Highline Adventures offers full-moon zipline tours on three side-by-side dual ziplines, each faster than the last, with speeds of 50+ mph. Tours last about 1.5 to 2 hours, include a scenic 4×4 ride to the top of the ranch, and are limited to eight guests. Riders must weigh between 75 and 275 pounds, and tours are $175 per person.

October’s full moon is traditionally known as the Hunter’s Moon, making this the perfect month to take the leap.

Perfect for: Adventurous couples, teens and adults, friend groups, and anyone looking for a thrill after dark.

Less Spooky, More Swanky

Harvest Moon Dinner at Brick Barn Wine Estate
Saturday, October 24 | 6 p.m.

Harvest season isn’t all goblins and ghouls. For a grown-up evening among the vines, Brick Barn Wine Estate is hosting an intimate Harvest Moon Dinner in the vineyard.

Winemaker Adrian Bolshoi joins guests for a relaxed, family-style dinner prepared by Ellie’s Catering Company. Expect a cozy autumn menu featuring butternut squash and apple salad, cider-braised pot roast and a spiced apple and berry crumble, paired with four Brick Barn wines and set to live instrumental music as the moon rises over the vineyard. Tickets are 95(85 for members), and the event is 21+.

Seats are extremely limited, so book early. The dinner is held outdoors without heaters, so bring a warm layer.

Perfect for: Couples, wine lovers, and parents in need of a well-earned evening out.

Fall Road Trip Tips

Pack layers. October days in the Santa Ynez Valley are often warm and sunny, but evenings cool off quickly, especially at outdoor events after dark.

Bring flashlights. Night mazes, ghost tours and moonlit adventures are much more fun when you can see where you’re going (sort of).

Book early. Many of October’s most popular experiences have limited capacity and sell out, so secure your tickets and lodging as soon as your plans are set.

Costumes are encouraged! Many local experiences welcome costumes, and local pumpkin patches and scarecrow displays make the perfect backdrop for your family photos.

Check the road. Before you go, review our Highway 101 construction updates for the latest travel information.
