There’s something undeniably awe-inspiring about watching a rocket soar into the sky—and here in Buellton, you don’t have to be a NASA scientist to experience the thrill firsthand. Just a short drive from our peaceful wine country town, Vandenberg Space Force Base regularly sends satellites and spacecraft into orbit, offering a front-row seat to one of the coolest shows on Earth.

A Unique Coastal Launch Site
Located about 35 miles west of Buellton, Vandenberg is one of the few launch sites in the United States capable of launching satellites into polar orbit. That makes it a key player in both government and commercial space missions. Companies like SpaceX, Firefly, Northrop Grumman, and even NASA frequently use the base to send rockets skyward.
When and Where to Watch
Rocket launches can often be seen—and heard, and felt as they rumble past—for miles around, including from several scenic spots in and around Buellton. While exact dates and times are subject to change up to the minute (rocket science is complicated, after all!); upcoming launches are usually announced in advance, giving visitors time to plan a viewing while in the area. Where to watch the latest rocket launch depends a lot on when the launch will occur. In the wee hours of the morning, from 1am-4am, perhaps a step out of your cozy cabin or hotel room into an open area nearby will suffice. If the launch window falls within more approachable hours, you might consider aligning your itinerary with one of these great spots:
- River View Park: Settle at the west end of the park for the best open sky views!
- Highline Adventures: Experience lift off with unparalleled views of Buellton from the top of Highline’s ranch, then soar through the skies yourself on more than a mile and a half of zip lines!
- Gaviota Peak Trail Head: Just a short drive down Highway 101; this coastal hiking trail offers breathtaking views of the sparkling Pacific Ocean, and endless skies perfect for peeping rockets as they fly overhead.
- Sta. Rita Hills Wineries: Nestled along Highway 246 between Buellton and Vandenberg is the prestigious Sta. Rita Hills wine region. If the rocket launch is planned midday, there’s no better way to await liftoff than with a glass of wine in hand.
Please Note: Vandenberg Space Force Base is an active Space Force and Air Force base, so only military and approved personnel are allowed access to the base itself. It is also important to keep in mind that last minute impacts such as weather could cause a launch to be delayed by hours, days, or more. Don’t forget to check local launch alerts for schedule updates, if launch viewing is an integral part of your visit!
