The Local’s Summer Guide to Buellton
Your Guide to Summer Sips, Scenic Stops, and Local Discoveries
Summer in Buellton has its own easy rhythm.
Mornings start cool and quiet, with golden hills, open roads, and just enough breeze to make you want to get outside. Afternoons are made for shaded patios, tasting rooms, long lunches, and a little exploring between plans. By evening, the pace softens into live music, dinner with friends, and one more sunset view before calling it a day.
To help shine a light on the best summer offerings in Buellton, we’ve asked our Visitors Center staff to share some of their favorite local experiences to help inspire your next visit. Here’s what we learned!
Before the day warms up, head outside. Buellton is surrounded by outdoor escapes that make it easy to add a little adventure to your trip, whether you want a peaceful nature walk or a more challenging hike.
Nojoqui Falls is a favorite for visitors looking for a shorter outing close to town. The waterfall is seasonal, so summer visitors may find more of a peaceful shaded walk than a rushing cascade, but the setting still makes it a beautiful morning stop. For something more ambitious, Gaviota Peak offers a bigger climb and sweeping views, while the Gaviota wind caves are a memorable option for hikers who like dramatic rock formations and coastal scenery.
Wherever you go, summer hiking is best earlier in the day. Bring water, wear sturdy shoes, check trail conditions before heading out, and choose a route that matches your pace. The reward is simple: fresh air, wide-open views, and an appetite for whatever comes next.
Kathy’s Vista Picks: One of my favorite views of Buellton is actually driving south on the Avenue of Flags with the mountains in view. River View Park is also a beautiful location to enjoy the outdoors, walk the botanic garden and enjoy the views of the Sta.Rita Hills in the background. Also, for the adventurous, the views from the top of Highline Adventure are stunning!
Jennifer’s Favorite Escape: SYV Botanic Gardens! I enjoy daily walks with my dog through the gardens and notice something different every time.
Some of the best Buellton moments happen between the big plans.
Maybe it’s a quiet backroad, a casual lunch spot you didn’t know to look for, a friendly tasting room conversation, or a shop you wander into because something caught your eye. These are the moments that make a trip feel personal.
That’s part of Buellton’s charm. It has the convenience of a central home base, but it still leaves plenty of room for discovery. You can build a day around wine tasting, outdoor adventure, great food, or family-friendly stops, then let the rest unfold as you go.
The local trick? Don’t overpack the schedule. Pick one or two anchors for the day, then give yourself time to explore around them. Summer is better when there’s space for a detour.
Kathy’s Favorite Hidden Gems: I have two – Mendenhall Museum and SYV Botanic Garden!
Jennifer’s Favorite Top Secret Spot: Mendenhall Museum, hands down.
Of course, no summer guide to Buellton would be complete without wine.
Buellton puts you right in reach of Santa Ynez Valley wine country, making it easy to spend an afternoon tasting without turning the day into a long drive. Visitors are especially curious about winery experiences that offer more than a pour: beautiful vineyard settings, food pairings, live music, wine club options, and a story behind the glass.
Local and nearby favorites like Brick Barn, Tierra y Vino, and Alma Rosa are all part of the conversation for travelers looking to sip, linger, and experience the region’s wine culture in a relaxed way. Whether you’re a longtime wine lover or just want a pretty patio and a good glass, Buellton makes it easy to shape the afternoon around your style.
For a simple summer plan, start with one tasting appointment, leave time for lunch, then add a second stop if the day feels right. If live music or special events are on your wish list, check winery calendars before you go.
Kathy’s Favorite Vineyard Views: Brick Barn Wine Estate offers a great setting with amazing views! I also enjoy Vega Vineyard because they offer a menu to enjoy with your wine. Plus I love the animals, the setting and the hidden little water features in the trees.
Jennifer’s Must-Experience Wine Destinations: Definitely Vega Vineyard or Folded Hills. Delicious wine and beautiful settings. Plus, both locations have farm animals you can feed! Keep an eye on Easy Street Wine Collective, too. Whenever they have an open house, it’s a must go. Great wine from local boutique wineries!
A great Buellton day does not need to be complicated.
Start with a morning hike or scenic drive while the air is still cool. Come back into town for lunch, then spend the afternoon wine tasting or exploring a few local stops. As evening rolls in, settle into dinner, catch live music if it’s happening, or simply enjoy the slower pace that makes summer here feel so good.
Here’s one easy way to think about it:
Morning: Get outside early with a hike, walk, or scenic drive.
Midday: Refuel with lunch in town and a little downtime.
Afternoon: Visit a winery, tasting room, or local favorite.
Evening: Keep it relaxed with dinner, music, or a golden-hour stroll.
Or skip the structure altogether. Sleep in, follow your appetite, ask someone local for a recommendation, and let the day surprise you.
Kathy’s Perfect Day in Buellton: Breakfast at Ellen’s Pancake House, maybe taking a walk around town or at the park. In the afternoon, we may go play a round of golf with friends at Zaca Creek Golf Course or visit a local store to see if there’s anything we must have. We might even drive out on Santa Rosa Road and enjoy the countryside! Evening is either spent enjoying takeaway dinner with family at home from Gino’s Pizza or Giorgio’s at Parkway; or dining out at either Firestone Walker Brewing Co. or Nana Thai. If it’s a special occasion, we always go to Hitching Post 2.
Jennifer’s Perfect Day in Buellton: Easy! My perfect summer day starts with breakfast at Mother Hubbard’s, wine tasting at Vega Vineyard or Brick Barn, and dinner at A-RU!
