Avenue of Flags 50th Anniversary Event
On Saturday, September 22, 2018 neighbors and guests gathered at the intersection of Avenue of Flags and 2nd Street. We were there to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of California Governor Ronald Reagan dedicating the Avenue of Flags in 1968. The actual anniversary is today, Saturday 28. In honor of this day we wanted to share with you the history of the Avenue of Flags. Plus, please enjoy these three segments from the celebration last Saturday.
Avenue Of Flags runs parallel to the southbound side of Highway 101, and was the original location of the coast highway when it first came to Buellton in 1917. When the coast highway was moved to its current location in the 1960s, the old highway lanes and grass medians from the original highway remained. In a dedication ceremony hosted by the state’s Governor Ronald Reagan on September 28, 1968, this route was renamed Avenue Of Flags. Many of the buildings you see here today were built to service highway travelers in the early 1900s, and maintain their historic character in present day.
